In the following weeks our blog posts will be dedicated to one of the most common pests – bed bugs.

Bed bugs are among the pests that you definitely do not want in your household. While mosquitoes, flies etc. are relatively tolerable and to a big extend harmless, bed bugs are nasty bloodsuckers that carry viruses and cause allergies which could be potentially dangerous to your health.

There are a variety of ways that your home can get infested by bed bugs. You should be aware of them so that you can take the necessary precautions and avoid the bed bug invasion.

By Travelling

The very process of travelling cannot get bedbugs into your home. Yet, they can easily get into your luggage from the train or airplane and then into your home. They won’t crawl directly on your skin, as they don’t like warmth that much like ticks. You might occasionally spot them on your hand or other part your body while they’re feeding. A simple way of preventing bedbug infestation in your home is following our traveller’s checklist.

Spending A Night In An Already Infested Place

The most common one is by spending the night at a place that has already been infested – be it a hotel, motel, hospital, etc. Bed bugs are tiny creatures with thin bodies and they easily crawl in your clothes. From there you take them back to your home without even realizing it. Once bed bugs are in your home, they have only one goal – to invade your bed.

By Buying Second Hand Books

It’s a well-known fact bedbugs can endure a long time without food and will wait for a host they can feed of. Second hand book bindings are among their preferred hiding places.

By Getting Second Hand Furniture

Another way that the bed bugs can gain an easy access to your household is when you buy second hand or vintage furniture which has already been infested. The small insects hide in the crevices of the bed frames, headboards, seams of mattresses, carpets, etc. Even if your mattress or the bed that you have bought is not infested with bed bugs yet, those hungry creatures will surely reach it, if you have put infested pieces of furniture in the bedroom. We’ve mentioned other possible ways you can get a bed bug infestation in our article about bed bugs facts.

Letting People Into Your Home

Normally other people won’t contribute to you household’s infestation, unless their property has bedbugs. In this case inviting them to your home means there’s a fair chance your property will get bedbugs.

How Can You Tell If You Have Bedbugs In The Room?

You can tell if the hotel room or the guest room, you spent the night in has been infested, by finding bite marks on your skin in the morning, or by noticing blood dots on the sheets. If you find some of these signs, then you have been the victim of bed bugs. As soon as you enter your home, make sure to wash your clothes and suitcases well. This way the pests and their eggs will be exterminated before they have the opportunity to invade your home.

The bad news is that it is unlikely to get rid of the bed bugs which have taken residence in your home, unless you seek professional assistance. It is highly advisable to try to prevent them from spreading to other areas in your home, or even to your friend’s houses and flats. Remember, bed bugs can be easily transferred through clothes, suitcases and the like.
